Sandfly Key Historic Homestead Pier3D ModelNoAI
The Sandfly Key Complex is in Everglades National Park, Florida (EVER49 8CR11). Settlers began occupying the island in the 1870s, with Captain Richard Turner here for one year in 1874 and Joe Wiggins building a homestead in 1885. In 1912, Charlie Boggess built his house, with ruins from a double concrete cistern and foundation piers, like this one, remaining. The house was two stories with nine rooms and three porches. The cistern collected rainwater from the roof of the structure, offering the only source of fresh water. Boggess primarily grew tomatoes and farming until 1923, when he and his family moved to Everglades City, where he became a well-known charter boat captain. The island’s cultural resources were surveyed using GIS, aerial LiDAR, terrestrial laser scanning, and GNSS GPS in a project collaboration with USF CDHGI and the National Park Service. Vegetation is digitally removed to see the features better.
