The 15th century collegiate church of Holy Trinity was dismantled in the late 1840s to make way for Waverley Station. The intention was to rebuild the church on a new site, but long delays due to disagreement on the choice of this facilitated the pilfering of many carved fragments before the eventual rebuilding in truncated form as Trinity Apse in Carrubers Close. Numerous carved fragments reappeared throughout the city as garden ornaments, where some are still to be seen. Others are now in the care of the National Museum of Scotland and the Museum of Edinburgh.
