The running battle between Continental troops and British regulars at the Battle of Hubbardton is known to most Vermonters, while less known is the Skirmish of Castleton that occurred one day prior. Its history may have been eclipsed by the more famous Battle of Hubbardton from July 7, 1777, given its fame as the only battle of the Revolution fought on Vermont soil, to which this encounter is related. Instead, the Skirmish of Castleton is more closely connected to the many skirmishes and raids, led by the British, Tories, and Native Americans, that occurred throughout frontier Vermont during the war. This collection, then, offers representative artifacts of items that would have been used during the skirmish. Special thanks to the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site, and the Bennington Museum, for allowing us access to your repositories to put this collection of artifacts together.
